The Tesla Model Y emerged as the best-selling car in Europe for both June and the first half of the year.
This achievement is notable as it surpassed popular mass-market combustion engine cars like the Dacia Sandero and Volkswagen T-Roc, marking the first time a Tesla model or any battery-electric car has held the top-selling position for six months in Europe.
Preliminary data from market researcher Dataforce indicates that Model Y sales in Europe tripled to 125,144 units in the first half of the year, compared to 40,147 units in the same period the previous year. In June alone, Tesla sold 29,765 Model Ys, reflecting a 104 percent increase year-over-year and making it the second-best month for the EV after March.
Although the Model Y led the sales charts, Tesla’s Model 3 sedan also performed impressively, with sales rising 115 percent in June to 12,693 units. However, its overall sales of 38,843 units in the first half of the year ranked 50th among Europe’s top-selling cars.
Combined sales of the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 reached 163,987 units in the first half of 2023, nearly doubling their sales compared to the same period the previous year. These sales contributed to a significant increase in battery-electric car sales in Europe, which totaled 853,720 units from January to June, marking an 85,000-unit growth.
To achieve these results, Tesla aggressively reduced prices in various global markets, including Europe, the United States, and China, leading to a substantial increase in deliveries.
Overall, Tesla delivered a record 466,140 vehicles in the second quarter of 2023, surpassing the previous record of 422,875 vehicles achieved in Q1 2023. In the first half of the year, Tesla’s global deliveries reached an impressive 889,015 vehicles.
